About the Project
The “Solutions Connecting Farmers” (SCF) project represents an innovation-driven initiative, supported by UNDP through the Adaptation Fund Climate Innovation Accelerator (AFCIA) Programme. Through this project, we are assisting two farming communities in the Municipalities of Shkodër and Vorë in Albania, in response to their needs for adaptation to conditions dictated by climate change, as well as in improving their efficiency and business model.
Oblikë, Municipality of Shkodër
Farming communities in the village of Oblikë, Municipality of Shkodër were provided with an advanced solar-powered pumping technology for improved irrigation coverage and yield. Noticeable gains have already been observed by the beneficiaries, who reported higher earnings due to the combined effect of savings and higher crop yield this summer, which can be explained only due to the solar-powered irrigation technology, in what was otherwise a drought-intensive season.
Marqinet, Municipality of Vorë
In the olive-growing community of Marqinet (Municipality of Vorë), REC Albania assessed local farmers’ need to clean olive biomass turned into waste after the harvesting process. This waste, in addition to negative impacts on agricultural logistics processes, is also associated with potential damage to soil quality due to toxic phenols deposited. Therefore, the Marqinet community was provided with a grinding mechanism (mountable shredder) for this olive biomass waste, which has helped the community increase production yield.
