EJA: Environmental Justice in Albania

About the Project

“EJA: Environmental Justice in Albania” represents a broad framework of activities aimed at strengthening the capacities of justice and law enforcement bodies to combat environmental illegalities, as a prerequisite that guarantees access to environmental justice. The project is supported by the European Union, in the context of the IPA III Programme. It is led by REC Albania, and includes two other implementing partners, BlueLink Bulgaria and BIRN Albania. Moreover, its strategic vision is embellished by the participation of OSCE’s Presence in Albania as a Project Associate.

Pillars

“EJA” is based on two main pillars: (I) Institutional-Public Outreach and (II) Capacity Development. These pillars guide the course of the project’s action towards several main objectives, such as strengthening institutional capacities to examine complaints (in the case of law enforcement bodies), process reports (in the case of prosecutors), and pursue cases (in the case of courts); establishing a coalition between civil society and investigative media to identify environmental impunity; as well as raising awareness of communities to identify instances of illegalities and to approach the responsible bodies for addressing them.

“EJA” Brand

This project will guide us towards the creation of a series of important products that are missing in the Albanian context in relation to environmental justice: the “EJA” investigative corpus; the “Cap & Gap” report series; the “EJA” expertise platform; the green line for reporting environmental illegalities; etc.
