In 2019, as part of its commitment to the Paris Agreement and Emission Reduction Objectives (NDCs), Albania was the first country in the region to adopt a national strategy and action plan on climate change. At COP26 recently held in Glasgow further commitments have been made to be followed and monitored.
The rights of millions of people around the world have already been affected by the climate crisis. Albania is no exception. This raises questions about justice, peace, security, equality between nations and generations. Climate action must be taken at all levels and by all actors. Many individuals and groups, such as children, youth, and environmental human rights defenders, have taken bold initiatives to be on the front lines of the war, to build climate justice.
Therefore, the annual conference of the People’s Advocate Institution 2021 “Rights of future generations and climate change” was held.
Among the speakers at this conference were Ms. Erinda Ballanca – People’s Advocate, Mrs. Lindita Nikolla – Speaker of the Assembly, Mrs. Fiona McCluney – Permanent Coordinator of the United Nations in Albania, Mr. Luigi Soreca, – Ambassador, Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Albania, representatives of institutions and NGOs.
REC Albania, through the director Mr. Mhallaq Qirjo, addressed in this conference the findings of the Monitoring of the Climate Change Strategy.
