On World Wetlands Day 2020, REC Albania organized an activity programmed to take place in one of the wetland ecosystems of Albania, at Kune-Vain lagoon in Lezha. Together with students, an excursion to the Lagoon ecosystem was organized. Students had the opportunity to get acquainted with the lagoon, the surroundings and the ecosystem there, but they also had the chance to be part of some outdoor participatory activities with the help of the staff of the Regional Administration of Protected Areas (RAPA) of Lezha and the staff of REC Albania. We got the chance to talk together with them on the challenges the lagoon faces due to recent climate change effects.
The students also had the opportunity to learn more on the lagoon and learn more about the values it has and ecosystem services which it provides to the communities living near. At the moment, the Kune-Vain lagoon is the most vulnerable lagoon in the country affected by rising sea levels as a consequence of climate change. The Kune-Vaini Lagoon System (KVLS) offers a variety of ecosystem values and services that are extremely valuable to the communities and the unsustainable use and change that the Kune-Vain lagoon system has undergone in recent years have made this ecosystem highly vulnerable.
